De film verwijst naar de 'Tongue-in-cheek Internet Award' of 'Darwin-Award' (een soort van spottende, ironische trofee), geschonken aan diegenen die zichzelf verminken of zelfs sterven door een gigantische stommiteit. Deze vaak postume eer is ontworpen omdat door de dood van de verantwoordelijken, de menselijke 'genetische poel' telkens weer verbeterd wordt voor de toekomstige generaties. Michael Burrows is een forensisch detective, die samen met zijn partner Siri, een schade-opnemer van de verzekering, een road trip maakt om zo het profiel van een potentiële 'Darwin Award' winnaar vast te leggen.
