Als de politicus de krant opkoopt moet er een frisse wind door de redactie en de nieuwe hoofdredacteur laat vele medewerkers ontslaan. Bedelen om te mogen blijven helpt de columniste niet. Als laatste bijdrage levert ze een verzonnen ingezonden brief in van een werkloze man, John Doe, die dreigt van de stadstoren af te springen uit protest tegen de politiek die niets aan werkloosheid doet. Het is een politieke bom in campagnetijd, maar ze krijgt haar baan terug om een John Doe in te huren, die voor grote krantekoppen kan zorgen en pas met kerst zelfmoord pleegt.
